TomTom Slash screen: Create your own

How to create a custom tomtom splash screen

Would you like your favourite picture to welcome you every time you switch on your tomtom?
It can be a picture of your child, girlfriend, football team or even that celebrity you’ve always fancied.
Well, you can now create your own tomtom splash screen by following these simple instructions:

Note: Splash screens are only for tomtom portable units (Not PDA or Mobiles)

...
..

Step 1
Find an image of your desire, any format is OK although ‘.jpg’ is usually better. also, the bigger the image the better.

Step 2
Load the image into your image editor (e.g. adobe photo shop). If you don’t have an image editor, you can download a trial version.

Step 3
Rotate the image 90oCW (the arrow below gives you an example).

Step 4
Resize the image to: For tomtom ONE, Go 300, 500, 700: 240width x 320 height.
For tomtom Go 510, 710, 910, Rider: refer to the splash screen currently installed on the tomtom.

The image should look like this:

Step 5
Save the image onto your desktop as ‘xxxx.bmp’ Note it’s important that you save it as a ‘.bmp’ format otherwise it won’t work on the tomtom.

Step 6
Check the image size, the image size for tomtom go 300, 500, 700 One should be 225kb (if not check step 4). For the tomtom go 510, 710, 910 refer to the currently installed splash screen on your tomtom and compare the two.

Step 7
Connect your tomtom and remove the splash screen currently installed (its called ‘splash.bmp’) and save it in another location on your computer. Or if you want to keep it on the tomtom, rename it by adding a letter to it (e.g. ‘Gsplash.bmp’).

Step 8
Copy the one you created (i.e. 'xxx.bmp') and paste it in the root folder (same place where the old one was), re-name it to ‘splash.bmp’. Note: all letters must be lowercase.

Test your new creation:
Disconnect the tomtom and switch it on.
If it fails to work, your tomtom will switch itself off every time when you switch it on.

These are the Common Mistakes:
- Wrongly names; the name should be ‘splash.bmp’
- Wrong size image; for the right size, compare it with the original.
- Rotation; as instructed above, also compare with the original

To restore the original; just rename it ‘splash.bmp’ and remove the custom one (or rename).
